The Saint Vincent de Paul Society – Welcome

The St Vincent de Paul Society (or as it is often known – the SVP) is an international Christian voluntary organisation dedicated to tackling poverty and disadvantage by providing practical assistance to those in need – irrespective of ideology, faith, ethnicity, age or gender. The Society is a lay organisation initially formed in Paris in 1833 by Blessed Frédéric Ozanam and his companions, and active in England & Wales since 1844. Placed under the Patronage of St Vincent de Paul, it is inspired by his thinking and works. It seeks, in the spirit of justice and charity, to help those who are suffering poverty in whatever form.

SVP parish groups are known as conferences. Here at St Margaret Clitherow we have an active parish conference who work in a charitable and non-judgemental way.  Much of our work in the parish is visiting people in their own homes and care homes.  Occasionally there is a need to visit parishioners in hospital and transport them to appointments.  We visit in pairs and only do so when invited by Fr Nicholas, family members, or friends. We also support families who may be in need, the St Vincent’s Centre in Leeds and we have an official prison visitor within our members. We provide sponsorship and support both locally and within the wider SVP organisation, so we are always grateful for donations and this parish has always been extremely generous in supporting our work.

Our conference always welcomes new members; being a member of the SVP is not only concerned with helping people, but it is about our own spiritual development.  We begin and end our meetings with prayers and a spiritual reflection.  We meet every two weeks on Thursday evening and give 1 – 2 hours each week to our visiting.

Since the beginning of the pandemic our work has undergone significant changes with most visits replaced with phone calls and our weekly meetings are via Zoom. Our current President is Ros McMullen who can be reached by emailing privaterosmcm@gmail.com or ringing 0783 4620011.
